Coming home to your pets after a long day proves to be one of the best feelings in the world. Having them around is always a joy as they are great in lightening the mood wherever they go. While our pets give us a lot of reasons to be happy, there are things that come with them that we should be patient about. This includes the stains we have to remove from the carpet. Though an unpleasant task, we have to be ready for instances like this. This becomes easier and less of a big deal if you know how to handle the situation properly. To help you better, we have prepared a couple of useful tips on how to remove pet stains from your carpet.
Pet Stain Removal Methods for Carpets
A good rule of thumb when dealing with any type of spill or potential stain on a carpet is to address it immediately. Whether it be washing off food debris or cleaning dog poop from your carpet, these tips will definitely lighten the load.
Attend to Spills Immediately
Always remember that any type of spill, if washed immediately, can still be removed or prevented from becoming a permanent stain. With this being said, it is important to act immediately when you see your pet drooling or urinating on the carpet. The first few seconds are always the most critical so keep your towels and pads accessible just in case.
Avoid Using Steam Cleaners
Some people tend to steam clean their carpets as if it were an ordinary garment. If you have been using this to get rid of urine or dog poop from your carpet in the past, now is the best time to stop. Steam cleaning a carpet soaked in urine or dog waste facilitates protein bonding to your carpet’s fiber. This leads to embedding the stain deeper and making the smell more permanent.
Use Pet Urine Remover from Stores
If you tend to go for store-bought urine removers, you should go choose an all-natural enzyme-based cleaning agent. This is because enzymes are better in digesting odor and a stain caused by proteins from the pet’s urine.
Avoid Using Ammonia
If you are training your pet to practice proper urination and defecation in a certain place, make sure that you keep the smell in that area. Avoid using ammonia as this has a similar odor to urine, this then may trigger them to urinate in the area.
Knowing what to use to clean the carpet is not enough. While it is easier to use store-bought cleaning agents as those come with instructions, homemade pet stain carpet cleaning can be a challenge. Do remember that the wrong execution of the steps can cause more damage than good. Here is how you do it.
Remove from Carpet
When you see pet urine or poop on your carpet, the first thing you have to do is get rid of it. Sweep or pick up poop in the carpet and remove as much urine as you can by using a paper towel. It is important that you do not rub your paste’s wet around the carpet. Rubbing or pressing against the waste will only spread it further, so make it a habit to blot instead of rubbing.
After blotting the carpet dry, you can now go on to prepare a vinegar solution. Create one with half part water and half part vinegar. If the smell is too strong, you can use 100% vinegar for your spray. A vinegar solution is effective in neutralizing ammonia content in pet’s urine. This then neutralizes the smell and makes it easier for you to rub the urine or poop clean off your carpet. Do this by spraying on the area and letting the solution set. After this, you can go ahead and scrub your carpet clean with a brush.
Use Baking Soda
If you want a better result, you can opt to use baking soda. You do this by combining it with a vinegar spraying solution. After using the vinegar solution on the affected area, you can put baking soda on it too. Leave it to dry for about a day or two. After doing so, finish off the job by vacuuming the area and then you will be surprised to see the stain lightened or gone.
Seeing your carpet with urine or poop is not a good sight, however, owning a pet only means that this is a sight that you may often see. Apart from patience, there is one more thing that you should be ready with and that would be a good and effective cleaning routine. Knowing that this works and that you can do it as often as needed makes owning a pet easier and less stressful.
